It was wrong. We are already on version 5.2.

The error isn't the problem. The problem, the crisis, was the reaction. Not a single person in the room doubted the answer.

The error stems from a category mistake. We treat AI like Google.

  • Google retrieves. You type keywords; it finds existing documents.
  • AI predicts. It guesses the next likely word based on patterns it learned months ago.

When those eighty leaders saw the wrong answer, they didn’t question it because the grammar was perfect. Our brains are wired to equate fluency with accuracy. If it sounds authoritative, we assume it is true.

But AI is simply high-speed autocomplete. It does not know facts; it knows probability. This leads to sycophancy. The model prioritizes “helpfulness” over truth. If you ask a question based on a flawed premise, the AI will often validate your error rather than correct you.

The 80 professionals in my presentation weren’t in crisis. They just accepted a wrong answer about software versions. But our kids and our aging parents could face the same dynamic with far higher stakes.

This isn't an argument against AI. It is an argument for literacy. The potential for good is extraordinary, but we must close these gaps, starting with ourselves and our loved ones.

The Experimentation Paradox

Most people try to use AI for things they don’t understand, which seems like a logical thing to do. A novice asks ChatGPT to write a legal contract. When the AI produces impressive-looking legalese, the novice is dazzled. They cannot see the subtle errors.

This is the worst way to learn.

To build literacy, you must do the opposite: Experiment in your zone of expertise.

  • If you are a historian, grill the AI on the French Revolution.
  • If you are a coder, ask for a script in a language you mastered ten years ago.
  • If you are a tax attorney, ask about tax scenarios you are familiar with.

When you use AI in your domain of mastery, you spot the hallucination instantly. You see the gap between “sounding right” and “being right.” That specific friction is where AI literacy is built.

The Business Case: Grassroots vs. Top-Down

The “Trust Gap” explains why top-down AI initiatives act as money pits, while grassroots adoption generates value.
